For three decades of independence, the nation grappled with criminal kingpins who seemed untouchable, maintaining close ties with high-ranking officials. Members of these criminal groups even ventured into political roles, cementing their grip on power.
However, with the rise of the current government, led by President Sadyr Zhaparov, the situation has taken a dramatic turn. Recent years have witnessed an unprecedented crackdown on organized crime, resulting in numerous arrests of both criminal group members and associated officials and law enforcement officers. This shift in strategy has rekindled hope among Kyrgyzstanis for a brighter and more just future.
Decisive Action to Transform Kyrgyzstan
President Zhaparov, in a statement made back in 2020, underscored the nation’s commitment to combating organized crime and corruption, emphasizing the ongoing reforms touching on various aspects of society, including the economy, society, the judiciary, and law enforcement.
Under the steadfast leadership of Lieutenant General Kamchybek Tashiev, the State National Security Committee (GKNB) has taken proactive measures against organized crime. Consequently, members of these criminal groups, along with their leaders, have found themselves behind bars, facing the full force of the law. Today, no official dares to associate with criminal organizations, a stark departure from the past when such associations were common.
In a clear message to all members of organized crime groups, General Tashiev stated, “The President has set a clear objective – there should be no organized crime groups in the country. Therefore, I implore all members and leaders of these groups: if you wish to live peacefully within the bounds of the law, stay. Otherwise, it’s in your best interest to depart the country. Otherwise, you will face full legal accountability.” Recent developments have shown that General Tashiev is resolutely following through on his promise.
