Kyiv Confirms 64 Ukrainians, US Citizen Released in Prisoner Swap with Russia

KYIV: Ukraine said on Wednesday that it has secured the release of an American citizen as well as sixty-four Ukrainian military personnel in its latest prisoner swap with Russian troops.

Chief of staff of the Ukraine Presidency Andriy Yermak said that 64 personnel of the Ukrainian Army are going back to their homes. In a statement on social media, Andriy Yermak said that a US citizen was also released.

The White House also confirmed the release of an American citizen and added that they welcomed the news. US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told the media that he could not give more detail about the individual for privacy reasons.

Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported that Murekezi was captured in the eastern Donetsk area of Ukraine in June and charged with taking part in anti-Russian protest demonstrations and inciting ethnic hatred in the region.

According to TASS Murekezi was born in Rwanda and shifted to the United States (US) in 1994. Russian troops captured Kherson city soon after Russia attacked Ukraine in February, but Ukrainian forces retook it.
