KYIV: There are reports of the massive number of explosions in the Kyiv, and air raid sirens have been sounding.
In the video on social media, the defence systems can be seen shooting down suspected Russian long-range missiles.
Ukrainian government messages warned citizens to keep away from windows as debris from intercepted Russian missiles fell from the sky. Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv mayor, said some missile debris had fallen in central districts.
The aggressive attack, which used both missiles and drones, was described as being “exceptional in its density” by one Kyiv official. Serhiy Popko, head of the Ukrainian capital’s military administration, said the barrage as being the “maximum large number of attack missiles in the shortest period”.
He said, “According to preliminary information, the vast majority of enemy hits in the airspace of Kyiv were detected and destroyed.”
In the last few days, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has been on a European tour, in which he has been promised many billion dollars worth of military equipment by Western allies, including the Unit Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
Since the Russia/Ukraine war on 24 February of the previous year, thousands of people and combatants have been killed or wounded, towns and cities have been damaged in the fighting, and nearly 8.2 million citizens of Ukraine have been registered as refugees in Europe, with 2.8 million of them in Russia.
