KUWAIT: Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, sworn in as the 17th Emir of Kuwait, has pledged to be a “loyal citizen” committed to the nation’s interests, unity, and prosperity.

In a speech before the parliament, Sheikh Mishal emphasized the need for cooperation between executive and legislative authorities to serve the best interests of Kuwait. Sheikh Mishal expressed his dedication to national unity, development, progress, and prosperity. He acknowledged the weight of the task ahead and the significance of the oath he had taken.

In his first speech as the new head of state, Sheikh Mishal highlighted the necessity to review Kuwait’s current reality, especially in terms of security, the economy, and living conditions. He noted that national obligations must be fulfilled.

Sheikh Mishal pledged to temporarily halt promotions and new appointments, echoing a decree signed on December 5, which ordered a three-month pause in state hiring, subject to extension. He emphasized the need to reconsider the current reality in all aspects in the face of crises, challenges, and dangers.

Sheikh Mishal took the oath to respect the constitution and laws of the state, defend the liberties and interests of the people, and safeguard the independence and territorial integrity of Kuwait. Following the passing of Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Sheikh Mishal assumed the role of the new Emir.

Kuwait’s cabinet submitted its resignation shortly after the new Emir’s swearing-in.
