ISLAMABAD: American actress and filmmaker Kristen Stewart has expressed a keen interest in directing a remake of Twilight, the film franchise that launched her to global fame, saying she would welcome the chance to revisit the story from behind the camera with full creative backing.

Speaking at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Creative Impact Awards, Stewart said the first Twilight film is the one she would most like to remake.

She praised the original filmmakers, particularly director Catherine Hardwicke, for bringing a distinctive and personal style to the early films before the franchise became a tightly controlled global phenomenon.

“I love what Catherine did, I love what Chris Weitz did — I love what all of the directors did,” Stewart told Entertainment Tonight, describing their work as bold and unconventional at a time when the series was still finding its identity.

Strong institutional support

Despite her admiration, Stewart said she could imagine her own version of the story, given a larger budget and strong institutional support.

“Imagine if we had a huge budget and a bunch of love and support,” she said, adding that she would be eager to re-adapt the material. “I’m committed,” she said with a smile.

Stewart also acknowledged the pressure faced by directors of the later films, noting that each still managed to retain a sense of individuality.

Her comments come amid renewed interest in the Twilight universe, with Lionsgate previously confirming plans for a television adaptation. Stewart’s remarks suggest the franchise may yet see a fresh creative direction.
