PESHAWAR: The government in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa held a meeting of the Apex Committee on Thursday to discuss the situation in the Bannu district, where violence broke out during a large rally demanding peace in the area.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and attended by other civil and military leaders, discussed the demands of the Bannu protesters. After a detailed discussion, the meeting accepted all demands of the Bannu protestors.

Following the committee meeting, Provincial Minister Pakhtun Yar stated that the Chief Minister had already accepted the 16-point demands of the Jirga.

He mentioned that the concerns of the Aman Jirga were addressed by the members of the Apex Committee. Yar added that the Apex Committee’s declaration would be issued soon.

The rally-turned-sit-in was organized last Friday after a series of attacks on security forces, government officials, and anti-polio vaccination teams in the province, particularly in Bannu, where a group of terrorists attacked the military cantonment in the city on July 15.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), in a statement, confirmed that 10 soldiers were martyred in the failed attack, while all the terrorists involved were killed by the security forces during the ensuing operation.
