PESHAWAR: In a proactive move to curb the threat of a Leishmania epidemic, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Syed Qasim Ali Shah has launched a crucial initiative by distributing the first batch of injections for the treatment of Leishmania to the District Health Officers (DHOs) of Mohmand and Khyber districts.
Stressing the importance of timely action to prevent the spread of the disease, Minister Shah emphasized the significance of preventive measures during a media briefing held to announce the distribution of injections.
Minister Shah disclosed that the Glucantime injections, essential for combating Leishmania, have been procured with the support of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and sold through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). He further revealed that additional batches of injections are expected to arrive within two weeks, ensuring a continuous supply to address the healthcare needs of affected regions.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Minister Shah underscored the necessity of extending preventive measures to other districts of the province, including those in the southern regions. He warned that failure to implement timely interventions could lead to the escalation of the situation into an epidemic, emphasizing the need for swift action to contain the spread of the disease effectively.
In collaboration with the Livestock Department, Minister Shah announced plans for a joint campaign against Leishmania, demonstrating a coordinated effort to combat the disease comprehensively. This integrated approach aims to leverage resources and expertise from multiple sectors to enhance the efficacy of preventive and treatment measures.
The initiative spearheaded by Minister Shah reflects the provincial government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
