PESHAWAR: Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Haji Ghulam Ali on Friday wrote a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for conducting elections on October 8.
The Governor proposed ECP conduct general elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on October 8, citing the growing terrorism incidents.
The Governor stated in his letter that terrorism incidents increased in the KP province.
Haji Ghulam Ali said that terrorist attacks were carried out in the Khyber district on March 19 and South Waziristan on March 15, whereas three soldiers were martyred in an attack in Dera Ismail Khan on March 22.
Brigadier Mustafa Kamal Burki was martyred, and seven soldiers sustained injuries in the Waziristan attack on March 21.
Governor cites security major reason for delay in elections
Governor Ali urged the electoral body to hold general elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the provincial assembly on October 8, which is in the country’s best interests.
Earlier in the day, the ECP notified about holding general elections in Punjab.

According to the Election Commission notification, the polling for the Punjab Assembly elections will be held on October 8, 2023.
The electoral body also withdrew its earlier schedule regarding holding general elections in Punjab in April.
The Election Commission withdrew the Punjab Election Program notification issued on March 8, decided to postpone the Punjab Assembly election, and announced October 8 as the new date for elections in the province.
The ECP spokesman said that President Dr. Arif Alvi has also been informed about the postponement of elections in Punjab.
