Knife Attacker Injure 4 in Russia

MOSCOW: A man launched an attack with knife in a hypermarket in Russian city of Saint Petersburg on Friday, wounding four people, said investigators.

Though knife crime is quite common in Russia, such public attacks are rare. The motive for the crime was not known.

According to the Investigative Committee for Saint Petersburg a man attacked shoppers and stabbed them using a knife in Okei hypermarket.

Investigators said four victims with injuries of varying severity were hospitalised and the suspect was detained at the scene of the crime investigators said.

They have started an investigation into attempted murder. Spokesperson of Police Irina Volk said officers had disarmed the man.

A video issued by police showed a man in a black jacket, lying on the floor with his head bandaged and a knife with drops of blood.

Local media reported a 44-year-old man had been apprehended, saying police had described him as a “lowlife type”.

It also posted CCTV camera footage of a man running through aisles in the store with a knife and a bottle and attacking a woman.

A woman who witnessed the attack said the man ran up to some woman in the middle of the store and stabbed her in the chest.
