King Charles Invites Pakistan’s PM to Commonwealth Summit

ISLAMABAD: King Charles III of the United Kingdom on Wednesday spoke with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over the phone to formally invite him to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa this October.

Prime Minister Sharif accepted the invitation and emphasized the significance of the summit, noting it would be the first CHOGM chaired by the King since he became Head of the Commonwealth.

During their conversation, Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the Commonwealth and its principles outlined in the Commonwealth Charter. He highlighted that the Samoa meeting will provide an important platform for discussing cooperation among Commonwealth nations on key issues such as sustainable development, strengthening democratic institutions, and empowering youth.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the King’s long-standing dedication to environmental issues and climate sustainability, expressing his eagerness to collaborate with Commonwealth leaders on the urgent challenge of climate change, particularly given Pakistan’s vulnerability to its effects.

Sharif also inquired about the King’s health and extended his best wishes to The Princess of Wales, who had recently completed her treatment. Reflecting on the King’s last visit to Pakistan as the Prince of Wales, he expressed hope that the King and The Queen would visit Pakistan again soon.
