ISLAMABAD: Karachi Kings all-rounder Khushdil Shah has opened up emotionally about the constant criticism he has endured throughout his career, including being labelled a “Parchi”—a derogatory term suggesting he was selected through favouritism—and his confrontation with spectators during Pakistan’s ODI series in New Zealand.
Speaking to the local media, Shah reflected on his turbulent journey with the national team, despite making his debut six years ago.
“I’ve had to make three or four comebacks during these six years,” Shah said. “At times, I was merely the 12th man. But I’ve always tried to address my shortcomings so that whenever I’m given a chance, I can contribute to the team.”
The 30-year-old voiced his disappointment over the lack of backing from fans and media, particularly across social media platforms.
Social media critics
“I’ve always been on the receiving end of criticism. If I’d had more support, perhaps I wouldn’t have become a subject of mockery,” he remarked. “What do social media critics actually know about my performance history?”
“They ought to look at my past records and see how I earned my spot. I’m not related to anyone influential—I’m neither a cricketer’s son nor a politician’s nephew. I come from a modest, respectable background. The jibes don’t shake me, but a bit of support would have silenced the doubters,” he added.
The aggressive left-hander also underlined the importance of contributing to the team over chasing personal glory.
“A quickfire 20 or 25 from me can sometimes have a greater impact than a century that doesn’t help us win the match.”
Abusive language
Reflecting on the episode where he confronted abusive fans in New Zealand, Shah explained, “The kind of language used by the crowd was beyond words. I’ve tolerated abuse for years, but when it involves my country or my parents, I cannot stay quiet.”
“That day, I bore the personal insults, but when they disrespected my nation and family, it crossed a line. If it happens again, I’ll respond the same way,” he asserted.
Currently representing Karachi Kings in the ongoing tenth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Shah spoke positively about the team environment.
“We gave it our all on Karachi’s tough pitches, and I’m satisfied with how I’ve played.”
He also shared what he has learnt from playing under the leadership of David Warner: “His philosophy is clear—stay positive and be aggressive. There’s no room for defence; he urges us to play with courage.”
