ISLAMABAD: Renowned Urdu poetess Parveen Shakir is being remembered on her 70th birthday today (Thursday).
The “Khushboo” poetess Parveen was born on 24 November 1952 in Karachi. She was one of the highly educated poets in the country, having two Master’s degrees in English literature as well as linguistics. She also held a Ph.D. degree in Bank Administration.
Her poetry is based on romanticism, love, beauty, and the contradictions in human psychology. She beautifully used metaphors, similes, and personifications in her work. One of her poetry books Khushboo won the praise of all generations.
Her ghazals have been sung by several popular singers such as Tina Sani, Mehdi Hassan, and Tasawwur Khanum. She was awarded the Pride of Performance in 1990 and Adamjee Award in 1976.
Parveen died on 26 December 1994 due to a car accident in Islamabad.
