ISLAMABAD: Khawar Maneka, the former husband of Bushra Bibi, has accused former prime minister Imran Khan’s legal team of attempting to legalize ‘un-Islamic’ practices within the 39-day Iddat (waiting) period after divorce.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Maneka stated, “The issue of Iddat and Bushra Bibi’s case is being handled politically, diverging from the teachings of Allah and His Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him).” He highlighted that his family, including his children, has faced several attacks on various social media platforms.
Last month, an Islamabad district and sessions court rejected Khan and Bibi’s appeals to suspend their seven-year sentences in the Iddat case.
Earlier this year, the couple was convicted by an Islamabad court following a complaint filed by Maneka, who alleged they married during the former first lady’s Iddat period.
During the press conference, Maneka presented a video explaining Islamic teachings on Iddat, urging adherence to these principles among Muslims in the country.
He expressed concern that the current Iddat period of 39 days was being manipulated to legalize unlawful acts related to remarriage, calling this a departure from Sharia law and urging national awareness.
Maneka also criticized journalist Omar Cheema for breaking the news of Khan’s third marriage without questioning the former prime minister about the matter.
