MIRPUR: Altaf Hussain Wani, Chairman of the Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR), has expressed his gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his consistent support of the legitimate cause of Kashmiris and his vocal advocacy for this issue during his recent speech at the UN General Assembly.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Wani welcomed this development, stating, “We deeply appreciate the support of our brotherly country, which not only stands firmly behind our struggle but has also played a significant role in raising global awareness about the peaceful resolution of the longstanding Kashmir conflict.”
Wani praised President Erdogan’s wisdom and comprehensive understanding of the world’s challenges today. He emphasized that it is now crucial for world leaders to respond to President Erdogan’s call to end conflicts to ensure lasting global peace.
Addressing the unresolved Kashmir dispute and the fragile situation in the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir, Wani stressed the importance of the United Nations taking an active role in peacefully resolving the conflict.
He called for establishing a Commission of Inquiry, as recommended by the OHCHR (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights) report, to conduct an independent investigation into human rights violations in the troubled region.
Wani urged the international community to fulfill its responsibility in holding India accountable for the actions of its troops in Indian-administered Kashmir, emphasizing that failure to act or appease the situation would only empower those responsible for abuse. —APP
