CHILAS: Due to landslides triggered by intermittent rain and snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan, the local administration has strongly advised against travel on the Karakoram Highway until it is fully restored.
Unprecedented weather conditions have made sections of the highway impassable, jeopardizing the safety of travelers. Thousands of passengers are stranded as road blockades persist amidst freezing temperatures and power outages.
Rainfall in lower areas and snowfall in upper regions, ongoing since Monday morning, have led to multiple blockages along the highway, including Achar Nallah in Kohistan and the Thore area. Efforts to clear debris and ensure public safety are underway, with authorities cautioning against unnecessary travel.
The advisory, aimed at preventing accidents and prioritizing residents’ and travelers’ safety, highlights the administration’s commitment to managing the crisis. Travelers are urged to cooperate with authorities until normalcy is restored.
Additionally, flights between Islamabad and Skardu, as well as Gilgit, have been suspended. Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has instructed relevant authorities to prepare for heavy rains and snowfall, emphasizing road rehabilitation and life-saving assistance across Gilgit-Baltistan.
