KARACHI: Pakistan’s largest city Karachi has been at the top of the list of the world’s top ten most polluted cities in the world on the Air Quality Index (AQI).

The average AQI reading for Karachi reached 220, while Lahore ranked third on the list. It’s crucial to note that an AQI ranging from 151 to 200 is deemed unhealthy, 201 to 300 is considered more harmful, and anything beyond 300 is extremely hazardous.

The AQI is determined based on five pollution categories: ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO₂) , and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). Health experts are sounding the alarm, emphasizing the severe impact of pollution on public health. Individuals with conditions such as eye discomfort, allergies, and respiratory issues face heightened risks.

In light of this, health experts are advocating for the adoption of protective measures, one of which is the use of helmets, especially when commuting on motorcycles. Wearing a helmet significantly reduces exposure to airborne pollutants. It emerges as a pragmatic solution in the face of pervasive air pollution, serving to shield the respiratory system from the harmful effects of toxic air.

Furthermore, health experts recommend incorporating simple yet effective habits into daily life to counteract the adverse effects of pollution. Regularly washing the eyes becomes a fundamental practice in protecting against pollution-induced discomfort and potential health risks. Additionally, maintaining a habit of keeping windows closed at home serves as a preventive measure, curbing exposure to outdoor pollutants and contributing to overall health and well-being.

The critical situation in Karachi and other highly polluted cities underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts at multiple levels – from policy interventions to individual lifestyle changes. Only through a collective commitment to environmental stewardship can we hope to mitigate the alarming levels of pollution and preserve the health and vitality of our communities.
