KARACHI, Pakistan: The BYD Karachi Marathon 2026 got underway on Sunday, drawing thousands of runners from across Pakistan and abroad to the city’s scenic Nishan-e-Pakistan and Sea View Road course. The third edition of the event, officially recognised and certified under international marathon standards, celebrates unity, endurance and active living in Pakistan’s largest city.
Participants competed across multiple categories, including the full marathon (42.195 km), half marathon, marathon relay and 5-kilometre run, making the event accessible for elite athletes, amateur runners and community supporters alike.
The full marathon began at 06:30 a.m., with runners departing from the Nishan-e-Pakistan start line before heading east along Sea View Road, passing landmarks including Clock Tower and Do Darya. A turnaround point near Creek Marina Towers led participants back to the finish at the iconic waterfront monument.
Growing reputation
Organisers said the marathon’s return reflected Karachi’s growing reputation as a world-class sporting destination and underscored efforts to promote wellness and community engagement through sport. More than 4,000 runners were expected to take part, with competitors from other countries joining in addition to local athletes.
The 5K run, aimed at families, beginners and casual participants, provided an inclusive option for those new to road racing and emphasised the event’s theme of harmony in diversity.
Spectators lined parts of the Sea View route, cheering on runners as they pushed through the challenging course in warm conditions. Support stations dotted the route, offering water and encouragement to participants of all ages.
The marathon also featured an expo at A.K. Khan Park in Seaview ahead of race day, where runners collected bibs, race kits and official merchandise, adding to the festive atmosphere.
As Pakistan strengthens its footprint in global athletics, the Karachi Marathon marks a high point in the nation’s long-distance running calendar and offers local talent the chance to qualify for international events.
