ISLAMABAD: Lahore and Karachi were ranked among the most polluted cities in the world as Pakistan battles to cope with smog-induced air pollution in winter.
The alarming pollution and smog in Pakistan often lead to traffic disruptions and incidents on major highways owing to the low visibility caused by smog and pollution.
According to data released by IQAir on Monday, the air quality index (AQI) stands at 433 in Peshawar, the Kyber-Pakhtunkhwa capital city, followed by 420 in Punjab’s capital Lahore with an AQI index of 420.
The AQI value is directly proportional to air pollution. Higher AQI value causes danger to human health and vice versa. Air quality is considered safe if the AQI is under 50.
According to the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution, an estimated 128,000 Pakistanis die every year from air pollution-related illnesses.
The air quality of different cities in Pakistan
The air quality in Punjab’s capital Lahore is 420, 253 in Bahawalpur, 247 in Muridke, 180 in Rawalpindi, and 155 in Sialkot. In Sindh, the air quality in Karachi is 280, while in Islamabad, the air quality stands at 186. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, air quality is 122 in Mingora and 91 in Abbottabad.
What leads to pollution and smog?
There are numerous causes of pollution and smog across Pakistan, such as the smoke emitted by vehicles and factories. Cities such as Lahore suffer terribly from pollution caused by vehicles.

In the year 2020, with the Covid-19-induced lockdowns, the pollution levels began to decrease gradually, spotlighting the pollution caused by vehicles.
The open burning of plastic and crop residuals also leads to pollution.
Health issues
The increasing pollution also exacerbates health issues such as pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma.
Foggy conditions
As per the Pakistan Metrological Department, dry and cold weather is expected in many parts of the country while cloudy weather with light rain is expected at isolated places in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and surrounding areas. Foggy conditions are expected in plain areas of Punjab during night and morning hours.

Recorded temperatures in cities
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, a maximum of 6 degrees Celsius (°C) temperature was recorded in Islamabad, 10°C in Lahore, 16°C in Karachi, 6.5°C in Peshawar, 0°C in Quetta, and -1°C in Gilgit.
