NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday asked the interim Afghan government to show its will to take on terrorist outfits within their country and make sure that Afghanistan does not become a hotbed to extremism and terrorism.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in an interview with Newsweek during his visit to the US, said since the fall of Kabul, Islamabad had witnessed an increase in terror attacks within the country (Pakistan). He said that Islamabad has concerns with the banned TTP as the world has concerns with al-Qaeda and other groups.

He said that Pakistan has experienced a climate catastrophe in the form of floods and heavy rains. The minister said that fundamental reforms were needed to develop an international system that serves all of us in order to combat the challenges of climate change in the developing world.

Coming to the issue of Kashmir, the minister mentioned India’s shameful acts of August 2019.  He said, “It is not only blowing up bilateralism, blowing up multilateralism, it is a unilateral action, an insult to the United Nations (UN) and an insult to the UNSC, the violation of international law, rules and the Fourth Geneva Convention,”.

The minister said as long as the issue of Kashmir was not resolved, there was a consistent type of tinderbox ready to blast in the way. You could have spiraling consequences for the region, Pakistan’s foreign minister remarked.

To a question, he said Pakistan has a good relationship with China and good historic ties with the US as well. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Islamabad had played a key role in the establishment of diplomatic ties between the US and China and would play its role to bridge the two sides.

The minister hoped that the countries would be able to develop a consensus to distance themselves from hyperbolic politics. He said that it’s better to explore areas in which you can work together rather than focusing on matters of disagreement.
