LOS ANGELES: Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been “respectfully yet consistently” pursuing American pop star Katy Perry since their first date in July, following her split from British actor Orlando Bloom, multiple media outlets reported.
Trudeau, 53, and Perry, 40, first sparked romance rumours in July when they were seen dining together at Montreal restaurant Le Violon and later taking a stroll with a dog near Taverne Atlantic.
Two days later, the politician was spotted attending Perry’s Lifetimes Tour concert at Montreal’s Bell Centre, according to photos shared on social media and cited by People magazine.
A source close to the singer told People that the pair “stayed in touch” after their initial meeting. “When she first hung out with Justin, she wasn’t looking to date, but they stayed in touch,” the insider said.
“They have many shared interests and a lot to talk about, but Katy was navigating too many things to even think about dating then.”
According to the source, cited by People magazine, Trudeau made “several efforts” to see Perry, even flying to California during a break in her tour. “They have an easy connection. She finds him attractive. He’s been very respectful,” the source added.
The two appeared to confirm their relationship this week after being photographed together on a yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara, California.
The Daily Mail published images showing the pair embracing, kissing, and sharing affectionate moments on board. Eyewitnesses told the tabloid the pictures were taken by tourists from a nearby boat.
Neither Perry nor Trudeau has publicly commented on the relationship. Representatives for both also declined to respond to media requests for comment.
During her concert at London’s O2 Arena on Monday, Perry appeared to reference the viral photographs.
“London, England, you’re like this on a Monday night after a whole day at work and a whole day at school? No wonder I fall for Englishmen all the time … But not anymore,” she told the audience, according to The Sun.
The pop star, who shares a five-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove, with Bloom, further hinted that her relationship with Trudeau had recently become official. When a fan proposed to her mid-show, she quipped, “I wish you’d asked me 48 hours ago.”
Trudeau, who served as Canada’s prime minister from 2015 until March this year, separated from his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. The couple share three children.
Following reports of Trudeau’s new relationship, Sophie Trudeau posted a cryptic video on Instagram about “letting go” of past loves.
“Sometimes we forget that nothing we love is ever meant to be kept,” she said. “Love was never about possession; it was always about presence.”
