KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-a major ally of the ruling alliance- Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced on Tuesday his commitment to introduce judicial reforms to the constitution. Speaking at the Sindh Bar Council, the chairman of the People’s Party emphasized the importance of implementing the Charter of Democracy.

He asserted that constitutional legislation and lawmaking should not be determined by the courts, describing a constitutional court as a necessity. “We want to provide justice to the common people,” he stated, highlighting that 15% of cases relate to constitutional matters but consume 90% of court time.

Bhutto called for a Federal Constitutional Court to handle constitutional and political cases, noting that previous amendments, like the 19th, were passed under duress. He expressed the need to empower the judicial system for immediate justice.

The People’s Party chairman proposed that the chief justice of this court be appointed on a rotational basis, ensuring representation from each province.

He underscored that these reforms are essential for upholding the constitution and ensuring equal rights across all provinces, suggesting that forming the constitutional court should involve mutual consultation.
