WASHINGTON: Jordan’s minister for foreign affairs and the US secretary of state on Tuesday discussed the escalating crisis in the Gaza and Lebanon and the urgent need for humanitarian aid in the area.
During his telephone talks with Antony Blinken, he stated that halting Israeli aggression in Gaza remains a key first measure on the path toward de-escalation.
He also emphasized the need for hostilities in Lebanon to end, calling for the complete implementation of UNSC Resolution 1701 to help maintain security and peace in the region. Resolution 1701 was approved in August 2006 with aim of addressing the conflict that year between Hezbollah and Israel.
He also demanded an end to Israeli escalations in the occupied West Bank as well as violations at holy sites in Jerusalem, calling for respect for the established legal and historical status quo.
The talks between the officials came amid an escalation of the current conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in significant numbers of civilian casualties as well as continuing decline in an already dire humanitarian situation there, and the expanding conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli army in Lebanon.
Officials stated that Blinken and Safadi also emphasized the need for global collaborations in efforts to address the humanitarian needs arising from the conflicts, and discussed other matters of mutual interest
