AMMAN: In a statement released on Monday, the Jordanian army disclosed that its air defense radar system had identified suspicious aerial activities originating from an unknown source along the border with Syria. Witnesses reported the sound of jets believed to be Jordanian hovering over the city of Irbid and areas near the border crossing with Syria.

Responding to the alert, an air force squadron was dispatched to ensure that the airspace was secure. While the army confirmed the detection of the movements, they did not specify their source.

This incident comes in the context of heightened regional tensions, particularly with concerns over potential spillover effects from conflicts in neighboring countries. Jordan, situated amidst volatile regional dynamics, has previously experienced security challenges, as evidenced by a drone attack on a US outpost in January that resulted in casualties.

Jordan’s request for Patriot air defense systems from the United States underscores its apprehensions about being drawn into conflicts involving  militant groups operating in the region. The government’s defense deal with the US reflects its strategic imperative to fortify its borders against potential threats.

Additionally, Jordan shares proximity with areas experiencing heightened military activities, such as missile launches from Yemen’s Houthi group targeting Israel. The need to safeguard its borders from external threats remains a priority for Jordanian authorities.
