AMMAN, Jordan: Jordanian security forces uncovered and detonated explosives hidden in a commercial warehouse in Abu Alanda, southeast of Amman.
The plot to destabilize the country, a key US ally. The explosives found on Monday were hidden by the same suspects who stored explosives uncovered on Saturday in a crowded residential area near a military airport used by US army planes.
The authorities have not yet disclosed who was behind storing the munitions or whether any arrests have been made, but they promise to reveal details once investigations are completed.
Jordan has thwarted numerous attempts over the past year to smuggle weapons by infiltrators linked to armed groups in Syria. These infiltrators have crossed the border with rocket launchers and explosives, some of which have managed to get through undetected. Iran denies involvement in these attempts.
Security sources indicate that some of these arms are destined for the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Several Jordanians linked to Palestinian militants have been arrested. Security officials assert that the incidents are terror-related due to the quantities of explosives found, linking them to Iran’s efforts to destabilize Jordan.
Jordan, hosting over 3,500 American troops, has faced increased targeting by militant groups operating in neighboring Syria and Iraq since the Israel-Palestinian conflict escalated in October.
