PARIS: Jordan’s King Abdullah has warned against the resumption of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip terming it a dangerous step following the collapse of fragile ceasefire.
During a visit to Paris, he stressed to restore the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and the resumption of aid flows.
“Israel’s resumption of attacks on Gaza is an extremely dangerous step that adds further devastation to an already dire humanitarian situation,” he said, standing next to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip killed at least 413 people on Tuesday, effectively ending a fragile ceasefire that had been in place since January.
The strikes, the most intense since the truce began on 19 January, targeted areas across northern, central, and southern Gaza, including Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah.
Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza said that a foreign UN worker was killed and five others seriously injured Wednesday by an Israeli strike on their headquarters.
A statement from the health ministry said there was “one death and five severe injuries among foreign staff working for UN institutions… due to the bombing of their headquarters by the occupation in the central governorate a short while ago,” adding they had been taken to the Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.
Speaker of Jordan’s Lower House of Representatives, Ahmad Safadi has said the Israeli forces continue its brutal aggression against people in the Gaza Strip, the Jordanian state news agency reported.
In the holy month of Ramadan, he said Israel’s atrocities prove that the Israeli hardline government solely believes in the language of bloodshedding and killing.
During the House’s session Wednesday, in the presence of Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan and Cabinet members, Safadi noted Israel has violated the ceasefire agreement, as usual, and demonstrated once again its disregard for international law and humanitarian norms.
Safadi called upon the international community to assume its moral and humanitarian responsibilities to stop the Israeli war machine.
He said Jordan will continue to fulfil its duty to support the Palestinian people and cause and maintain various forms of assistance to Gaza people.
Jordan government spokesman Mohammed Momani has also said: “We have been following since last night Israel’s aggressive and barbaric bombing of the Gaza Strip,” underlining “the need to stop this aggression”.
