Jordan King Tells US, Amman Will not be Drawn into Gaza War

AMMAN: King of Jordan Abdullah on Sunday told a delegation of US Congressional aides that his country will not be drawn into the ongoing Gaza war and will prioritize the safety and security of its citizens.

The king while reiterating Jordan’s commitment to stability in the region also stressed urgent efforts to de-escalate tensions and secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He warned that the conflict poses a major threat to the region and urged intensified global efforts to prevent it from becoming a broader war.

He highlighted the dangers of attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank by extremist settlers and violations at Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. He stressed the need for a political solution based on the two-state framework as the only way to lasting peace and security for Palestinians.

King Abdullah also emphasized the importance of continued support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees to ensure it can fulfill its humanitarian task.

The meeting also reviewed opportunities to strengthen US-Jordan ties, with King Abdullah expressing gratitude for the continued support of Washington. The US delegation acknowledged Jordan’s role in promoting peace and stability in the region under the leadership of King Abdullah.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi; Dr. Jafar Hassan, the director of the King’s Office; and Jordan’s ambassador to Washington, Dina Kawar also attended the meeting.
