WASHINGTON: Republicans in the House Oversight Committee accused US President Joe Biden’s family of having earned more than $10 million through questionable business agreements while he was vice president of the US.
Joe Biden has rejected any wrongdoing about his son’s dealings
The committee said that Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, had received more than $1 million linked to a business deal with a Romanian business tycoon while the ex-vice president was managing ties with the country. The agreement was reportedly organized by Rob Walker, one of Hunter Biden’s partners.
The committee released a detailed report showing that Walker started receiving funds from the Romanian tycoon soon following President Biden welcomed the President of Romania to Washington in 2015. Popoviciu’s firm in Cyprus, Bladon Enterprises, paid the private company of Walker over $3 million from 2015 to 2017.
The Republicans said that following receiving money from Bladon, Walker’s firm deposited more than $1 million into the accounts of Hallie Biden, Hunter Biden, and James Gilliar. The committee opposed that this pattern reflects that of a previous business agreement that Hunter and Walker had with a Chinese energy company.
Following receiving money from that firm in 2017, Walker also paid over $1 million to Gilliar and the Bidens, the Republicans claimed.
James Comer, the Committee head, alleged that the Romanian funds were part of more than $10 million that Hunter, his family, and business partners received from agreements with foreign companies in China, Ukraine, and other places during Biden’s vice presidency. James Comer held a news conference, saying, “Hunter and his partners pursued business in nations that directly correlate with Biden’s work as vice president of the US. It is unethical.”
The Republicans have failed to present any solid evidence that Biden directly benefitted from or knew regarding the business agreements and money transactions. However, the Republicans believed that Joe Biden must have been aware of all the firms established by Hunter and his partners to conduct business.
Joe Biden has rejected any wrongdoing about his son’s dealings and defended Hunter’s business strategies. Joe Biden said that his son did not do anything wrong.
