ISLAMABAD: Emir Jamat-e-Islami Pakistan Hafiz Naeemur Rehman will lead the funeral prayer of Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was martyred in Iran while attending the oath-taking of newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian.

According to a statement by Jamat-e-Islami on Wednesday, the JI chief will lead the funereal prayer at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi after Maghrib prayers.

Earlier, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, in a post on X, condemned the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh and said that the Hamas chief had fought the cruellest power on earth.

Naeem said Ismail Haniyeh, the lion of Allah, had succeeded and made his way towards paradise.  The JI emir said Israel and its guardians would pay the price for this cruelty.

“Israel’s actions have put the world in new challenges, it is evident that this war will no longer be limited to Gaza,” he said.

Iranian media on Wednesday reported that Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, was killed in an airstrike in Tehran. The attack reportedly occurred around 2 a.m. local time at a special residence for military veterans in northern Tehran, where Haniyeh was staying.

According to the Fars news agency and other Iranian sources, Haniyeh was targeted by an air-launched missile. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the incident, stating that Haniyeh and a bodyguard were killed in the strike. The IRGC described the attack as a “hit” on Haniyeh’s residence.

Pakistan on Wednesday said the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran was a “reckless act”, describing his killing in attack as “terrorism”.

According to a Foreign Office press release, “We are deeply shocked by the timing of this reckless act, coinciding with the inauguration of the Iranian President, an event attended by several foreign dignitaries, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan,”.
