Japanese Climber Dies, Another Injured at Pakistani Peak

ISLAMABAD: A Japanese climber has been killed and another wounded while trying to climb a never-scaled mountain in Pakistan, western media reported on Wednesday.

They were on an expedition organized by a local tour operator in Andaq Valley of Pakistan’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.

According to an official of Alpine Club of Pakistan both mountaineers were trying to scale 5,800 metres high Virgin Peak.

Climber Shinji Tamura slipped and fell at an altitude of 5,380m while trying to climb the mountain on Friday.

Semba Takayasu the other climber told media that their rappelling point was broken and they fell together. He said Shinji during the fall hit a rock and had a big injury.

Takayasu despite his injury managed to reach base camp to get help, while a search team was promptly sent to the area where Tamura slipped.

The search for his body was stopped on Monday and local authorities in the region confirmed Tamura’s death.

Tamura said he was saved by a helicopter from the base camp and later reached at Skardu town, gateway to world’s second tallest mountain K-2.

Every year a large number local and foreign climber and takers come to Pakistan’s north, where some of the world’s highest mountains are situated.
