TOKYO: In the wake of Israel-Palestine conflict, five G7 members, including France, Germany, Italy, Britain, and the United States, issued a joint statement expressing their steadfast and united support for the State of Israel. However, Japan and Canada refrained from signing the statement, opting for a flexible approach in addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno explained Japan’s stance, stating that Japan, as the chair country of the G7, has been actively collaborating with member nations, engaging in discussions to pursue peace. He noted that the joint statement aimed to reflect the diverse perspectives and positions of each G7 member on the matter.
Japan Maintains Flexible Approach
“Japan’s absence from the statement may be attributed to its desire to maintain flexibility in its approach,” Matsuno said. He emphasized that Japan is actively working behind the scenes, mediating, and exerting influence on both Palestine and Israel. Japan remains committed to efforts toward de-escalation and contributing to the peaceful resolution of the situation.
The joint statement by the five leaders also emphasized their recognition of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people while stating that Hamas does not represent those aspirations. Japan’s approach underscores its commitment to maintaining diplomatic flexibility while actively engaging in efforts to mediate and contribute to peace in the region.
