TOKYO, Japan: During a meeting in Tokyo, a 71-year-old Japanese politician reiterated Japan’s support for a two-state solution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

She emphasized Japan’s understanding of the Palestinians’ aspiration for an independent sovereign state and expressed backing for ongoing efforts to achieve this goal.

Japan’s stance on recognizing a Palestinian state remains comprehensive, considering how best to advance the peace process, as stated by the top Japanese diplomat.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit urged Japan to recognize a Palestinian state, arguing that Israel’s policies of apartheid, annexation, and oppression are not viable solutions.

Speaking at the Japan National Press Club during the 5th Japan-Arab Economic Forum, Aboul Gheit attributed the October 7 Hamas offensive, dubbed Operation al-Aqsa Storm, to Israel’s occupation and oppression of Palestinians since 1967.

He called for the establishment of a Palestinian state as the only solution, highlighting the ongoing desire of Israel to suppress Palestinian independence hopes. The Palestinians aim to establish an independent state in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, with East al-Quds as its capital.

Israel occupied East al-Quds during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and annexed the city in 1980, claiming it as its “eternal and undivided” capital, a move not recognized by the international community.
