TOKYO: Jens Stoltenberg, NATO chief, and Fumio Kishida, Japanese Prime Minister, on Tuesday pledged to strengthen ties, saying Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its increasing military cooperation with China had created a tense security environment.

Stoltenberg is currently visiting Japan following a visit to South Korea.

Both leaders said in a joint statement after the meeting that the most complex and severe security environment after WWII had been created.

They also expressed their concerns over Russia’s nuclear threats, its joint military drills with China near Japan, and the development of nuclear weapons in North Korea.

Talking with journalists, Stoltenberg said that Russian victory in Ukraine would embolden China, which is already building up its military, bullying its neighbors, and threatening Taiwan.
