KYOTO: Researchers in Japan have unveiled an AI-powered robot monk, dubbed Buddharoid, designed to provide spiritual guidance and potentially address shortages of human monks in the future.

Developed by Kyoto Kyoto University, the humanoid has been trained on complex Buddhist scriptures, enabling it to respond to sensitive questions that individuals might hesitate to ask human advisors.

According to AFP, the robot can also offer a physical presence at temples and religious sites.

The project is led by Seiji Kumagai of the Institute for the Future of Human Society, who has previously created religious AI chatbots like Buddha Bot.

For Buddharoid, Kumagai installed the updated BuddhaBotPlus system onto a Chinese-made Unitree G1 humanoid robot, creating a machine capable of both spiritual conversation and human-like movements.

During a demonstration at a Kyoto temple on Tuesday, the faceless robot wore a grey robe, clasped its hands in prayer, walked around, and performed other tasks.

It offered guidance to a young journalist struggling with overthinking, advising in a calm baritone: “Buddhism teaches the importance of not blindly following one’s thoughts or acting hastily.

One method is to quiet the mind and release attachment to the thought itself.”

AI-powered religious chatbots have gained popularity worldwide across multiple faiths, though they have also sparked debate. Japan previously introduced Mindar, a non-AI android delivering sermons, while Germany showcased a touchscreen robot in 2017 that gave blessings in five languages.

Buddharoid represents a combination of AI intelligence and robotics, allowing it to advise, hold spiritual conversations, and perform human-like motions.

Kyoto University highlighted that ethical considerations remain essential for the use of such robots in religious contexts.

However, with Japan’s ageing population and a tightening labor market, humanoid robots may play an increasing role in assisting or performing traditional rituals.

AI humanoid robots are expected to support or conduct some rituals traditionally performed by human priests,” the university said. “This innovation could transform religious practices and culture.”
