TOKYO: Japanese Crown Prince Akishino, the younger sibling of Emperor Naruhito, is all set to embark on a journey to Vietnam  to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Vietnam. This trip is part of Tokyo’s efforts to strengthen connections with Southeast Asia and other developing nations to collectively address regional and global challenges.

In a press conference held last week before his departure, Crown Prince Akishino emphasized the significance of enhancing relations between Japan and Vietnam. He highlighted the extensive history of cultural and economic interactions dating back to the 16th century. “Japan and Vietnam share a profound relationship,” Akishino remarked. I aspire to contribute to fostering amicable relations between our two nations. He stressed the importance of young individuals fostering mutual understanding and respect for each other’s cultures through exchanges.

During the period from September 20 to 25, Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko will visit Hanoi. There, they plan to pay homage at the mausoleum of Vietnam’s inaugural president, Ho Chi Minh, and partake in commemorative activities, including attending a new opera. Subsequently, they will travel to Hoi An, a historic port city in central Vietnam.

Crown Prince Akishino expressed his anticipation for the visit to Hoi An, renowned for its historic “Japantown” that once accommodated Japanese traders during the early 1600s. Additionally, he looks forward to exploring the nearby My Son Sanctuary, an archaeological site with roots in Indian Hinduism.

This trip marks Crown Prince Akishino’s third visit to Vietnam, following earlier visits in 1999 and 2012. Known for his expertise in the study of chickens, he acknowledged the wild breeds of chickens found at different stages of domestication in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. This, along with the presence of giant catfish in the Mekong River, intrigues him and adds to his attraction to the region.

The royal visit comes after Emperor Naruhito, Crown Prince Akishino’s elder brother, and Empress Masako visited Indonesia three months ago. This visit was in conjunction with the commemoration of 50 years of friendship between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Japan. Japan stands as Indonesia’s primary provider of official development assistance, as per Japan’s Foreign Ministry.
