EAST JERUSALEM: The Japanese government has allocated $ 7 million to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Arab media reported on Tuesday.

The aid will assist UNRWA to continue with its emergency operations, such as providing food and drinking water, to 85,000 internally displaced persons who have found shelter at the agency’s offices in Gaza.

About 1.2 million people have been displaced in Gaza, including around 600,000 sheltering in 150 UNRWA facilities, all of whom are facing dire conditions.

UNRWA facilities are overcrowded

The shelters are overcrowded, with a limited supply of food, drinking water, and other needs.

Japanese Ambassador for Palestinian Affairs Nakashima Yoichi said Japan this year commemorates 70 years of partnership with UNRWA. He added Japan’s long-term collaboration is the evidence of its keenness to end the suffering of those affected around the world, including Palestinian refugees.
