ISLAMABAD: Top incarcerated leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) have called on the United Nations and international community to actively intervene in resolving the protracted Kashmir issue to prevent further conflict and devastation in South Asia.
APHC Chairman Masarrat Aalam Butt and senior Hurriyat leader Shabbir Ahmad Shah, both detained in New Delhi’s Tihar prison, have emphasized that India’s rigid position on Kashmir cannot suppress the persistent aspirations and sentiments of the people of Kashmir. They ask that the issue extends beyond New Delhi’s internal affairs and is recognized as an important political and humanitarian concern worldwide, local media reported.
In their separate messages issued in Srinagar, Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the APHC leaders also stressed that the Kashmir dispute is a core issue acknowledged by the international community, including the UN. The leaders warned that failing to resolve the dispute threatens peace and security in South Asia and called for proactive global involvement to address the conflict. They also reminded that India had initially referred the dispute to the United Nations, which has passed numerous resolutions advocating for its resolution.
They strongly criticized the Indian government’s inflexible policy on issue of Kashmir, asserting that such an approach fails to resolve the root of the problem. They also reminded that the United Nations remains a suitable mediator, given its historical involvement in the dispute and India’s promises to address the issue in line with the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.
The APHC leaders also emphasized that the United Nations must act decisively to address the long-standing conflict, stressing that global intervention is essential for ensuring long-term peace and stability in South Asia.
