SYDNEY: New South Wales allrounder Jack Edwards has been called up to Australia’s squad for the third and final ODI against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Edwards, set to make his international debut, comes in following impressive domestic performances. The move is one of several changes announced by Cricket Australia to both the ODI and T20I squads.
There are also notable additions for the upcoming T20I series. Glenn Maxwell, who has been recovering from a wrist injury, is set to make his return for the final three T20Is, bringing strength to the Australian middle order. Fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis, who has been sidelined with a calf injury, will rejoin the squad for the fourth and fifth T20Is in Queensland. A 20-year-old Mahli Beardman, a promising fast bowler from Western Australia, has earned a surprise call-up for the final three matches of the T20I series.
Labuschagne Released; Hazlewood and Abbott to Miss T20Is
In other squad news, Marnus Labuschagne has been released from the ODI squad ahead of the final match to prepare for Queensland’s upcoming Sheffield Shield clash against New South Wales. Australia will also be without star bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott for the latter stages of the T20I series, as both are set to play for New South Wales in the Shield competition against Victoria, starting November 10. Hazlewood will feature in only the first two T20Is, while Abbott, who is recovering from a split webbing on his hand, will depart after the third T20I in Hobart.
Kuhnemann and Philippe Added to ODI and T20I Squads
Matthew Kuhnemann, who played in the first ODI in Perth but missed the second game in Adelaide due to Adam Zampa’s return to the side, rejoins the squad for the final ODI in Sydney. In another move, Josh Philippe has been added to the T20I squad as a backup wicketkeeper, with Josh Inglis still recovering from a calf strain.
Edwards Shines for Australia A
Edwards’ call-up comes on the back of strong performances for Australia A in India. The 25-year-old allrounder led the team in India’s domestic 50-over series, contributing 4 for 56 and 89 off 75 in one match while also captaining the side. His inclusion provides Australia with an opportunity to experiment with an allrounder-heavy lineup in the ODI finale, potentially resting regulars like Mitchell Starc or Hazlewood due to the tight schedule.
