ISLAMABAD: Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi on Wednesday called on Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and called for de-escalation between Pakistan and India after India’s “unprovoked and unlawful strikes” last night.

During the meeting, Ishaq Dar informed the Italian minister of a serious regional security crisis that arose from India’s “unprovoked and unlawful strikes” last night, resulting in the loss of civilian lives.

“This violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty is tantamount to a blatant act of war,” he told Piantedosi.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that Pakistan strongly condemned India’s cowardly action, which was a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, international law and established norms of inter-state relations.

Ishaq Dar said that Pakistan had exercised restraint, but India, with its blatant disregard for international law, continued to threaten regional peace.

Expressing deep condolences on behalf of the Italian government over the loss of innocent lives and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families, Minister Piantedosi emphasised the need for de-escalation, given the wider geopolitical ramifications of the situation.

Earlier, the Italian Interior Minister held an important meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Mohsin Naqvi.

Mohsin Naqvi apprised his Italian counterpart of India’s “cowardly act of aggression” carried out last night and highlighted the motives behind it.

During the meeting, the need for meaningful efforts to de-escalate tensions was emphasised.

Mohsin Naqvi highlighted that Pakistan’s armed forces gave a befitting response to Indian aggression and “destroyed five enemy fighter jets”.

Interior Minister Naqvi said that Pakistan has been warning the world about India’s dangerous designs from day one and held India responsible for destabilising the regional situation.

During the meeting, both sides discussed trade, security ties and matters of mutual interest. It was agreed to further enhance cooperation with Italy in the areas of security, counter-narcotics, human trafficking, and combating terrorism.

The Italian Interior Minister reiterated his commitment to strengthening collaboration in counter-terrorism, human trafficking, and anti-narcotics efforts.

Mohsin Naqvi stated that taking strict action against illegal immigration and its facilitators is Pakistan’s top priority.

Both sides agreed to establish a Joint Working Group for developing a unified strategy against narcotics and organised crimes. The Italian Interior Minister said that an Italian team would soon visit Pakistan to strengthen border security.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that Pakistan was ready to enhance cooperation with Italy in the field of combating drug trafficking.

He further stated that over 3,000 criminals involved in illegal human trafficking and 500 facilitators were arrested last year.
