ROME: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Italy’s opposition to a potential ground invasion by Israeli forces into the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah during a session in the Senate on Tuesday.

In her address to lawmakers, Meloni emphasized the grave humanitarian consequences that could result from military action on the ground in Rafah. She underscored the importance of safeguarding the lives of Palestinian civilians residing in the densely populated area.

“We will reiterate our opposition to military action on the ground by Israel in Rafah that could have even more catastrophic consequences for the civilians crowded in that area,” stated Meloni.

The Prime Minister also outlined Italy’s priority of establishing new land routes and a maritime corridor from Cyprus to Gaza. This initiative aims to facilitate the safe and efficient delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave, which has been grappling with urgent humanitarian needs amid ongoing conflict.
