ROME: At least 600 people have been evacuated as a precaution in Sardinia, Italy, as huge fires, made worse by gushing winds, have been blazing in the southern and northern parts of the island.

Among the fires, a major blaze was burning on Sunday afternoon in the Posada municipality of the northeastern province Nuoro in Sardinia, causing a serious situation where winds were pushing blazes towards nearby coastal villages popular among tourists, Xinhua reported on Monday.

As of early Monday, Canadair firefighters, firefighting planes, and helicopters were still struggling to extinguish the blazes, and the regional civil protection department was bringing in reinforcements.

Blazes Destroy Farm Lands

The blazes destroyed farms and devastated forage reserves in the Feraxi area and threatened several accommodation facilities.

Christian Solinas, Sardinia’s governor, said that he already asked the national civil protection services to boost the firefighting air fleet and forwarded an early warning for the activation of the European civil protection mechanism.
