ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the country’s judiciary would correct mistakes in an appeal, adding that no one can ignore the legal orders, media reported on Saturday.

The Turkish President made the comment after a court had awarded a sentence to Istanbul’s opposition mayor and sent him to jail. Tayyip Erdogan said that there had been several court orders that they have harshly criticized, but that doesn’t give any person the right to insult judges or ignore the court’s orders.

He was addressing a rally in Turkey’s southeast. He said he does not care who the opposition’s candidate is in the next elections.

Istanbul’s Mayor sentence

Earlier, Ekrem Imamoglu, who is being viewed as a challenger to the Turkish President, was sentenced to prison by a court. He was prosecuted for insulting public officeholders in 2019.

Erdogan said that it was not the final court decision and that an appeal would be filed in Court. He added that it would be corrected if the court had committed a mistake. Critics are of the view that the judiciary in Turkey has been bent on Erdogan’s will to punish his opponents, but the government says courts are independent mayor.
