RAMALLAH: Local leaders have said that Israel has stepped up its demolitions of Palestinian houses in parts of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, after a policy formulated by right-wing extremist ministers in the country’s government.

World should press Israel’s government to stop the demolition of houses

On Wednesday, Israeli bulldozers knocked down buildings in the Wadi Al-Hummus, Sur Baher, and Silwan neighborhoods of Jerusalem. Rights activists asked people to publicly condemn the demolitions by posting messages on different social media sites such as Twitter using the hashtag #Stop_Demolishing_Jerusalem.

The activists called on the international community, global institutions and Palestinian Authority to interfere immediately to force Israel’s government to stop the demolition and displacements that threaten the Palestinian community in Jerusalem.

Reports said that since the beginning of January, occupation forces have demolished 30 houses. As many as 211 Palestinian homes were demolished in Jerusalem in 2022.

A sit-in has been holding by villagers and activists from the Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission for the last two days in the village of Al-Khan Al-Ahmar, east of Jerusalem.

The protestors fear Israel will demolish their houses, following a final six-month deadline for them to leave expired on Wednesday. Eid Khamis Jahalin said that people are scared that Israeli bulldozers will demolish the village and displace its two hundred and fifty residents.
