GAZA CITY, Palestine: At least nine more Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Monday, as strikes continued despite a fragile ceasefire and ongoing talks in Cairo.

The health ministry said 43 other people were wounded in the same period, bringing the total number of injured since October 2023 to 173,171.

The ministry said the death toll had risen to 72,980 since the start of the war on October 7, 2023.

In southern Gaza’s Mawasi area of Khan Younis, two people were killed when a strike hit near a tent encampment, according to medics at Nasser Hospital.

In the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, three people, including an 8-year-old boy, were killed when an airstrike hit near residents digging a well, medics at Shifa Hospital said. Several others were wounded.

Later in the day, one person was killed and three were wounded in a strike near Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, according to medical officials.

The latest deaths come despite a ceasefire that came into effect on 10 October 2025, which has been repeatedly tested by renewed violence.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said that since the truce took effect, Israeli strikes have killed 970 people and wounded 3,063 others.

Israel and Hamas have repeatedly accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed in attacks during the same period.

Nearly the entire population of Gaza — around 2 million people — has been displaced multiple times and is now concentrated in shrinking areas along the coast, living in makeshift shelters or damaged buildings.

The war has caused widespread destruction across the enclave, with United Nations estimates placing reconstruction costs at around $70 billion.

Meanwhile, mediators in Cairo continued efforts to salvage the ceasefire agreement.

Three days into renewed talks, Hamas and other Palestinian factions told mediators that Israel must halt attacks to allow progress on the second phase of negotiations, according to a Hamas official cited by Reuters.

The Palestinian groups also demanded increased humanitarian aid to Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the original ceasefire lines.

The Hamas official said Israel had not yet committed to key demands, including ending attacks, allowing 600 aid trucks daily into Gaza, and halting territorial expansion.

Since the fragile ceasefire came into effect, both sides have continued to report violations, with Israel saying it is targeting Hamas-linked sites.
