GAZA CITY: Israeli strikes killed at least 12 people in Gaza on Sunday, according to the territory’s civil defence agency, in what Hamas described as a violation of the ongoing ceasefire agreement.
The deaths occurred despite a US-brokered truce that entered its second phase last month, with both Israel and Hamas accusing each other of breaching its terms.
The civil defence agency said an air strike hit a tent sheltering displaced people in Jabalia in northern Gaza, killing five and wounding several others. Another strike in the southern city of Khan Younis killed five more people, while one person was killed in shelling in Gaza City. A separate incident in Beit Lahia left one person dead from Israeli gunfire, the agency said.
Hospitals in Gaza confirmed receiving multiple bodies following the strikes.
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said targeting displaced civilians amounted to a “serious violation” of the ceasefire.
Gaza’s health ministry says at least 601 people have been killed since the truce began, while the Israeli military says four of its soldiers have died in the same period.
Media restrictions and limited access to Gaza have prevented independent verification of casualty figures or full access to the conflict zone.
