BEIRUT: A Syria war monitor has said that an Israeli airstrike on Thursday in Quneitra province in the Syria-controlled Golan Heights killed at least two people, days following major attacks elsewhere in the country.

According to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights an Israeli air attack targeted a car on the Damascus-Quneitra Road, killing at least two people. AFP cited a local source as saying that two burned bodies were removed from the car that was attacked.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike in Syria. Israel forces seized much of the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and then annexed it in a move unrecognized by the world.

Thursday’s attack came days following strikes blamed on Israel killed around 18 people in the central province of Hama, Syrian authorities said. The Observatory stated that those attacks killed around 27 people, including civilians.

Hezbollah has also targeted military positions in the Israeli occupied Golan in recent months as part of assaults from Lebanon in support of Hamas since October 7. Limited rocket strikes from Syria by Hezbollah-allied men have targeted the Israeli Occupied Golan since October.

Since Syria’s civil war erupted in 2011, Israel has conducted hundreds of attacks in the country, mostly targeting military positions and Iran-backed fighters. Israel officials rarely comment on strikes in Syria, but have repeatedly said they will not allow Iran to expand its presence in Syria.

Israeli attacks on Syria surged following Hamas’s October 7 surprise attack then eased somewhat after an April 1 attack blamed on Israel hit the Iranian consular compound in Damascus, prompting Iran’s first-ever direct strike against Israel.
