BEIRUT: The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that it had launched a series of air strikes in Lebanon, sparking fears of a potential war between the two neighboring countries after months of intermittent cross-border hostilities.
Details regarding the targets and extent of the air strikes were not immediately provided by the Israeli military. However, Lebanese media reported that the raids targeted southern villages, including Adchit, Sawwaneh, and Shihabiyeh.
The Israeli military’s actions came shortly after some people were injured in northern Israel due to fire from Lebanon, as confirmed by medics.
Hezbollah, a Lebanese group, has refrained from claiming responsibility for the rocket launches. However, Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, stated on Tuesday that the fire from southern Lebanon would cease only when there is a ceasefire between Palestinian resistance group and Israel.
Israeli Military Actions Heightens Concerns of Full-scale War
Nasrallah’s warning of broadening the confrontation if Israel continues its actions has further heightened concerns of a full-scale conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Israeli military chief Herzi Halevi had previously remarked on the heightened likelihood of such a conflict.
Since the outbreak of the war between Hamas and Israel on October 7, casualties have mounted. In Lebanon, at least 243 persons have been killed, including Hezbollah fighters and civilians, according to official figures.
