JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said on Saturday that it was boosting up forces in the occupied West Bank, a day after a Palestinian gunman killed seven people near a synagogue on Jerusalem’s outskirts.

Spokesperson statement

“Following a situational assessment by the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces), it was decided to reinforce the Judea and Samaria (West Bank) Division with an additional battalion,” the military said.

In a related development, 15 strikes were launched against Hamas targets. According to Western media, Israeli forces carried out fifteen airstrikes on Hamas targets.

The IDF said that its airstrikes were aimed at Hamas targets in Gaza. The United States, Germany, the European Union, and some Arab countries have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. The Israeli Defense Forces arrested members of the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad in a refugee camp in Jenin on Thursday. The Israeli army accused it of plotting an attack.

According to the statement, PIJ members opened fire on Israeli troops and were killed in an exchange of fire. Jenin is regarded as a hotspot for Palestinian fighters.
