WEST BANK: The Israeli forces raided a refugee camp near Jericho city of, Palestine on Saturday, besieging houses allegedly being used as hideouts for Palestinian attackers and shooting at locals who opened fire. The fighting injured six Palestinians, two seriously, said the Health Ministry of Palestine, and jolted a generally quiet oasis town which has seen less violence than other cities of the West Bank.
The Israeli army said it entered the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp in the occupied West Bank to search for suspects in a shooting incident last week near the Israeli settlement.
Last Saturday, with the occupied West Bank on edge following the deadliest Israeli military night raid in two decades, followed by Palestinian attacks in east Jerusalem that killed seven people, the Israeli army said a Palestinian gunman resorted to firing in a restaurant at a residential area near Jericho town. After firing one bullet, the Palestinian gunman fled the crime scene, the army said. No one was injured.
Palestinians holed up in homes for attacks
The army said many Palestinians had holed up in their homes following the shooting with the help of family and were planning more attacks.
Camp residents reported receiving text messages asking families to keep their children inside their homes and avoid clashing with Israeli troops.
The military said that the suspects and family members went out of one of the homes and turned themselves in. The army had leveled much of the house, leaving a pile of debris and twisted metal.
