ISLAMABAD:  The Israeli military has announced it will start sending draft notices to members of the ultra-Orthodox community this week as the law giving them exemptions from military service has expired, according to Al Jazeera.

It said that the army intends to ramp up its “enforcement actions against draft evaders and deserters from the entire population”.

Several phases

The notices will be sent out in several phases in July until all 54,000 summonses are issued, Al Jazeera cited Israeli army statement as saying.

Meanwhile, Arab News reported that Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and injured others during a raid in Salem on Sunday.

Wissam Ghassan Hasan Ishtiya, 37, was shot by Israeli forces in Salem, a village east of Nablus, after they stormed the area and surrounded two houses, firing live ammunition, Arab News reported. Ishtiya was wounded and detained while wounded before being pronounced dead, the Wafa news agency reported.

Qusay Nasser Mahmoud Nassar, 23, also from Salem, was killed by Israeli fire. A 62-year-old Palestinian male was wounded by live ammunition and shifted to the hospital by Palestinian Red Crescent Society paramedics on Sunday, according to Wafa news agency.

Arab News cited the Red Crescent Society as saying that its paramedics received the body of Qusay Nassar from inside one of the two surrounding homes in Salem and shifted it to Rafidia Governmental Hospital.
