Israeli Armed Forces Kill Several Armed Militants in West Bank Raid

ISLAMABAD/JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said that Israeli armed forces killed a number of armed fighters during a raid on refugee a camp in the West Bank city of Jericho in Palestine on Monday aimed at capturing suspected militants.

According to the Arab News, it said that the target of the raid was suspected of an attempted attack on a restaurant in the Israel settlement of Vered Yeriho on Jan. 28.

The Palestinian health ministry said that three citizens had been injured, one critically, but it gave no information on any dead.

The raid came during a period of tensions that have drawn fears of the further escalation in violence and prompted a call for calm on both sides from the United States (US) and world bodies, including the United Nations (UN).

Israeli forces raid

Israeli armed forces have carried out months of the raid in the West Bank in the wake of a spate of attacks in Israel the previous year, and Israeli forces have been put on high alert after the lone Palestinian gunman shot seven citizens near a synagogue on Jan. 27.

The military said that Monday’s raid in the Aqabat Jabr camp was aimed at capturing the group belonging to Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs Gaza, who it said have barricaded in a home in the camp and were planning more operations following the attempted restaurant attack.

On Jan. 28, it said that two armed individuals appeared in the restaurant in the Vered Yeriho settlement, where around thirty people were present, but fled before carrying out the attack after an arm malfunctioned.

Over the previous week, it said that forces had conduct a number of operations to try to find and arrest the suspects.
